For example, scientists interpret potentially huge quantities of laboratory or simulation data or the results from sensors out in the field to aid reasoning, hypothesis building and cognition. The field of data mining offers many abstract visualizations related to these visualization types. They are active research areas, drawing on theory in information graphics, computer graphics, human-computer interaction and cognitive science

picture:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlight_Information_Visualization_System
source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_visualization

Task 3 Photostroy

Here is the Photostory. The media power of sharing information nowaday is not exclusive owned by TV or radio, but also makes use of new media such as internet. Everyone is virtually own a TV channel by Internet. Everyone can tell their own sotry, deliver their brielfy to the whoel world by Internet. We should remind that the new media may consist a lot of problems such as web bullying. The any part of session is making use of Photostory. We learnt how to use MS photo story 3 to make our own story to share with the others. It is a very user friendly application which is free of charge and it is very easy to use and we can produce a photo story easily and presented into different machine and media such as DVD, VCD and even to mobile phone.

Reflection and comment on task 2 atmosphere

15 June 2006
Reflection and comment on Task 2 Atmosphere.

After watching the visual displays on Atmosphere of classmates, I have some learning and reflection form my classmates.

The matters should be improved on my work:
1 The out-looking of my work should be improved. It is totally unattractive. My skill in visual design should be improved.

2 Do not include too much information in the picture. Use multi pictures to illustrate different information, rather than include all information in a single picture.

3 Compare the size of atmosphere and Earth, as atmosphere is a part of Earth.

4 Make it interactive if my skill in Flash is improved.

On the other, I have some suggestion to my classmates; I think the following could help them to present the information correctly.

1 Scale is always matter. Although we could not draw in correct scale, as radius of Earth is 6400km while the thickness of atmosphere is 500km. We should at least draw Earth larger than the atmosphere and the thickness of different layers of atmosphere in correct order.

2. What is the meaning of 10 km height and 500 km height? I have put a airplane in Troposphere and a space shuttle in space. This can help readers to understand what usual happen in that attitude.

3 Bear in mind the focus you want to draw. Some attractive visual works make me think about Solar system.

4 Information really matters.
Visuals can communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, efficiency and convey the most knowledge in the shortest time in the small space.
~ Tufte (1983)

Do not miss the information you want to tell.

Task 2 Atmosphere

Reflection on Session 2 (2 June)

Reflection on Mite 6323

While language is a socially constructed and conventialized mode of expression no corresponding single visual language exists ·
JOHN-STEINER, V. (1997). Notebooks of the Mind: Explorations in Thinking. New York: Oxford University Press

It is not how much information is there but rather how effectively it is arranged
Key Points from Tufte, 1990

Principles of information design are universals – like mathematics – and are not tied to unique features of a particular culture.
Key Points from Lester (2000)

I agree on those ideas very much. Physics concepts are always represented by picture and graphs. Serve concepts can be related into a concept map. In reading the picture, students not only learn the information, nut also learn the relationship. Visual display is usually more attractive than words. Students are more willing to read. It is also easier to remember. This visual aids in teach is not only make student easier to learn, but also necessary to make them to understand. People of any culture and language can understand those concepts. That means visual display is universal.

Task 1
What makes effective visual display?
£ Your task is to examine five visual display of same information. Select one that you think is the best. Prepare to justify your selection by developing arguments for effectiveness of that visual.

I think that the fifth one is the best.
Although all five pictures talk the same information, I do not focus on the information but the presentation of the information. When I look at those pictures, I will to try out which one can tell me the size of the giant squid? Where it lives? What it eats? , In mine first sight.
In the fifth picture, the pointing and align of the text is fit on the squid.
The size of the squid is well represented by the picture

Analyzing images makes you take long careful look. First image becomes part of your general knowledge. The more you know the more you see

Lester (2000 )

Reflection on Session 1 (26 May 2006)

Reflection on Session 1 (26 May 2006)

Visuals can communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, efficiency and convey the most knowledge in the shortest time in the small space.
~ Tufte (1983)

The session focuses on the power of visual display to communicate, to present, to teach. A lot of information in can be presented a small screen space. Technology and Interactivities make it possible to create powerful visual displays. In PowerPoint, a lot of examples are displayed to illustrate this idea.

I am not quite sure visual display can present complex data precisely, as most of precise data is presented in data book. However, in Physics teaching, we really use a lot of visual display to illustrate complex theories. For example, we make a photo of how the light way pass though a convex lens, rather than say “When a light ray go direct to the center of the lens, the reflected ray is not deflected.”

By a good picture, students can learn the idea and concept of how the forces act on the body and its subsequence motion within a small area. By word, it could be serve paragraphs.

Visual display can also help understanding; .As a student read the picture and understanding the idea directly. If he has to read paragraphs, he will have to “translate the words into concept”.

As a teacher I would like to learn more about how visual display and interactivities can help students to understand complex and abstract scientific concept.

PowerPoint

Here is my PowerPoint

<img style="DISPLAY: block;
